Coaching the quiet kid: building confidence on the bench

Youth sports isn't only about the loudest, fastest kid on the field. Some of the most rewarding coaching happens with the quiet ones.
Notice them on purpose
Quiet kids are easy to overlook. Make a point of a one-on-one check-in every practice, even just ten seconds.
Give a role, not just reps
A specific job — "you're our restart specialist today" — gives a hesitant player a reason to step forward.
Praise effort over outcome
Confidence grows from being seen trying, not only from scoring.
The bench is where a lot of a season's growth happens. Coach it like it matters.
