The invisible labor of the team parent
Every team has one. The parent who somehow always knows whose turn it is for snacks, who has a spare jersey in the trunk, who reminds everyone the game moved fields. They rarely get thanked, and they're often one bad week from quitting.
The work that doesn't look like work
Coaching gets the spotlight. But a season also runs on snack schedules, carpool coordination, uniform handoffs, and the dozen small reminders that keep families from missing things. It's real labor, and it usually lands on one person by default.
Default ownership is the problem
When no one's explicitly responsible, the most conscientious parent absorbs it all. That's not generosity — it's a gap in how the team is organized, and it burns people out quietly.
Make the jobs visible
You can't share what no one can see. Name the recurring jobs — snacks, carpools, photos, the end-of-season party — and put them somewhere the whole team can sign up. A visible list invites volunteers; an invisible expectation repels them.
Rotate on purpose
A snack rotation that everyone can see, with the next three weeks already assigned, removes the weekly "whose turn is it?" entirely. The same goes for carpools and equipment.
Thank them out loud
The single cheapest retention tool in youth sports is public gratitude. A "thanks to the Okafors for handling snacks this month" in the team channel costs nothing and keeps your most valuable volunteers around.
The team parent isn't a luxury. They're load-bearing. Treat the role like one worth supporting, and you'll keep them all season.
